🎓 Training & Safety Requirements

Mandatory Training

You must complete the Cargo Handling in Port (CHIPS) course before your first day of work.

This certification is essential for authorization to work on the docks and ensures you understand all safety protocols and procedures.

Work Uniform & PPE

All necessary work uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to you before your first day. This includes:

  • High-visibility clothing
  • Safety boots
  • Hard hat
  • Safety gloves
  • Any role-specific equipment

Drug & Alcohol Testing

GSS reserves the right to carry out drug and alcohol testing:

  • Randomly at any time
  • As a result of employee error
  • Following any incident or misconduct

💰 Pay & Benefits

Payment Schedule

Weekly payment via BACS transfer:

  • 📧 Wage slips emailed every Wednesday
  • 💳 Payment deposited into your bank account every Friday

Hourly Rates

Monday - Friday (06:00 - 18:00): £12.25/hour

Monday - Friday (18:00 - 06:00): £14.75/hour

Saturday - Sunday (06:00 - 18:00): £15.15/hour

Saturday - Sunday (18:00 - 06:00): £17.15/hour

UK Bank Holidays: Double time rates apply

Holiday Entitlement

Holiday accrues at a rate of 7 minutes per hour worked. You can track your holiday balance using the Hours Tracker tool.

Important: Holidays must be booked with as much notice as possible to ensure adequate coverage.

Daily Work Notifications

Your job details will be communicated to you before 1pm the day before via:

  • 📱 Text message, or
  • 📞 Phone call

Information provided will include:

  • Job type and role
  • Work location
  • Start time
  • Any special requirements

Work Priority System

When there are not enough bookings for all employees:

Priority will be given to those with the most reliable attendance and best performance record. Maintaining excellent punctuality and attendance is crucial for consistent work allocation.

Transport Provision

If you are scheduled to work outside of Goole, transport is provided by GSS free of charge. Details will be included in your work notification.

🏥 Absence & Emergencies

If you are ill or have a family emergency:

You must make every effort to report this to us as soon as possible. Early notification is essential to:

  • Allow time to find suitable cover
  • Minimize disruption to operations
  • Maintain good standing with clients
  • Protect your employment record

Reporting Procedure

  1. Contact GSS office immediately when you know you cannot work
  2. Provide clear information about your situation
  3. Indicate expected return date if possible
  4. Keep GSS updated on any changes
